Mississippi River Delta: Land Subsidence and Coastal Erosion

چکیده
The Mississippi River Delta is a major center for transportation, industry, human population and ecosystem services. Critical areas included energy production, navigation, fisheries, flood protection of coastal communities, restoration damaged habitats. Complex environmental management in great river system requires broad-base complex science, engineering monitoring. A national state objective has become the that threatened by subsidence, flooding, storm surges, compaction, oil extraction gas extraction. primary objectives paper are to document landscape geological properties which have contributed successful resource economic development historically-rich region North America natural risks Delta. Economic urban industry creation levees USACE land subsidence problems. Environmental challenges include as result pumping vast amounts gas, lack sediment deposition levees, erosion impacts hurricanes, disposal untreated treated wastewater, periodic flooding water pollution.

Land Subsidence over Oilfields in the Yellow River Delta
Subsidence in river deltas is a complex process that has both natural and human causes. Increasing human activities like aquaculture and petroleum extraction are affecting the Yellow River delta, and one consequence is subsidence. The purpose of this study is to measure the surface displacements in the Yellow River delta region and to investigate the corresponding subsidence source. In this pap...
متن کاملEvaluating Land Subsidence Rates and Their Implications for Land Loss in the Lower Mississippi River Basin
High subsidence rates, along with eustatic sea-level change, sediment accumulation and shoreline erosion have led to widespread land loss and the deterioration of ecosystem health around the Lower Mississippi River Basin (LMRB). A proper evaluation of the spatial pattern of subsidence rates in the LMRB is the key to understanding the mechanisms of the submergence, estimating its potential impac...
متن کاملCost analysis of water and sediment diversions to optimize land building in the Mississippi River delta
[1] Land loss in the Mississippi River delta caused by subsidence and erosion has resulted in habitat loss and increased exposure of settled areas to storm surge risks. There is debate over the most cost-efficient and geomorphologically feasible projects to build land by river diversions, namely, whether a larger number of small, or a lesser number of large, engineered diversions provide the mo...
متن کاملDelta Subsidence: An Imminent Threat to Coastal Populations
The Ganges–Brahmaputra Delta is one of several delta regions around the world that is sinking as the weight of its cities and industries combines with overextraction of natural resources from soft sedimentary deposits.
